Google responsive display ads: every text limit for 2026
With responsive display ads you upload headlines, descriptions, images and logos, and Google generates ad combinations for websites, apps, YouTube and Gmail1. Google adjusts the size, appearance and format to fit the available ad space1, so the same text can end up in a small banner or a large card.
The numbers below come from Google’s own documentation. We checked each page on 7 October 2026 and cite it next to the number.
The text limits
| Field | Limit | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Short headline | 30 characters | 1 to 5 |
| Long headline | 90 characters | 1, required |
| Description | 90 characters | 1 to 5 |
| Business name | Display width of 25 | 1 |
| Call to action text | Display width of 30 | Optional |

Double-width characters count twice
In Google Ads text ads, each character in double-width languages such as Korean, Japanese or Chinese counts as two toward the limit3. The business name and call to action are measured as display width2, so plan for wide scripts to fit about half as many characters.
Writing to these limits
These are our suggestions, not Google rules:
- Make every short headline different. Five headlines that say the same thing give Google nothing to combine.
- Put the offer first. Google resizes ads to fit the space1, so the first words are the safest.
- Don’t repeat your business name in every headline; it has its own field.
- Check each language separately, especially Korean, Japanese and Chinese.
